In this day and age, we wear shoes that insulate us from Earth’s natural and healing energies. We spend most of our time indoors and less time in nature. We spend more and more time around electrical devices and signals. We have increasingly disconnected ourselves from nature and the healing benefits of the earth through our busy lifestyles and habits.
The simplicity of grounding or earthing by connecting to the earth with bare skin restores and maintains the body’s natural electrical state, and is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-aging modality. People who have applied earthing into their lives feel, look, sleep better, and reduce pain.
Who would have thought that something so easy to implement, costs nothing, and is readily available to everyone could be this powerful? Reducing pain and stress in the body by rebalancing its electrical state back to equilibrium?
The connection between our body and the electrical earth
The earth is filled with natural energies and electrical signals that naturally pulsate through every living being on the planet.
These natural energies are also ‘waves’ of energy caused by the motions of subatomic particles called free electrons. Although we can’t see them, these free spirits form part of the earth’s electrical circuitry, functioning in conjunction with the other elements of the earth’s atmosphere such as clouds. Thunderstorms replenish these free electrons to supply the surface of the Earth with continual and abundant supplies.
Also, according to the sun’s position in the sky, the electrical potential of the earth’s surface can vary at different times of the day. There are more intense positive and energetic energies throughout the day in comparison to nighttime.
Our bodies are made up of dynamic electrical circuitry. Trillions of our cells are continuously transmitting and receiving electrical energy. Our cells are like small batteries, retaining small amounts of current. To stay healthy, the aim is to keep the voltages in our bodies as low as possible, for as long as possible. Our bodies are excellent conductors of electrons if we allow direct skin contact with the earth.
Electrical fields regulate the movement of water and nutrients into the cells, and each type of cell has a frequency range in which it operates. Our entire body’s movements, behaviors, and actions are animated by electricity. This includes your brain, heart, nervous system, muscles, and immune system.
History
Long ago, most humans used to live in caves and use natural materials like grass as bedding. Even today, cultures around the world still reside in caves and use conductive and organic materials as part of their living experience. In many rural cultures, many people still walk barefoot and sleep on the ground.
Dating back more than 1400 years ago, leather shoes were worn and were most conductive when moist. These days, shoe materials such as rubber and plastic are insulative materials and disconnect us from the earth’s natural healing energies.
It has been shown that animals thrive and are in the healthiest conditions when they are allowed to roam free in the outdoors.
What happened?
It’s easy to see that we have lost touch with our electrical roots because of the industrialized world we live in. Unfortunately, because of our modern world and lifestyle habits, we have created electrical imbalances in our bodies without even realizing it.
Living in built up areas and high-rise buildings, sleeping on coiled spring mattresses, sitting and working near electronic devices, disconnect us more and more from the benefits of earth’s energies. We are constantly bombarded by harmful EMFs from mobile phones and their signals, computers, house wiring, Bluetooth and wi-fi signals, etc.
We become positively charged by EMF’s and static electricity within our environment. These stray voltages are what lead to illness and discomfort in the body. When we are connected to Earth, our body loses this charge and begins to neutralize.
Cortisol is the ‘stress hormone’ that increases when we are anxious, fearful or worried about things. Grounding has been shown to lower cortisol levels. Our bodies thrive when our electrical systems are balanced.
The benefits of grounding
Being outdoors connects us to Mother Nature. Have you felt a sense of peace, serenity, and relaxation when connected to nature? Whether swimming in the ocean, walking along the beach, hugging a tree, camping for the night, walking through a national park, or walking barefoot on the grass.
Here are some of the main benefits of grounding
- Reduces inflammation – cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes are all linked to chronic inflammation
- Reduces or eliminates chronic pain
- Improves sleep
- Increases energy
- Promotes calm and lowers stress
- Improves blood flow and thins the blood
- Relieves muscle tension and headaches
- Lessens hormonal and menstrual symptoms
- Speeds healing and prevents bedsores
- Reduces jet lag symptoms
- Protects against harmful EMF’s
- Speeds recovery from intense athletic activity
How to ground
You can easily ground yourself by walking barefoot or connecting the body to the earth or grass with bare skin. The wetter the grass, the more conductive it is. Make grounding a daily practice for at least 30 minutes if possible.
Walking in conductive earthing shoes will aid in grounding the body whilst walking outside. Walking in wet grass after the rain or moistened by dew is even more conductive than walking in dry grass. You could also use a conductive device or bed sheets connected to the earth while you sleep or sit indoors.
Make sure your children get the benefits too. Get them outdoors as much as possible, buy them grounding shoes.
Don’t forget your pets. To keep them healthy, make sure you give them plenty of outdoor time to roam and play and connect to the earth. You could consider grounding their bed if they sleep indoors.

Conclusion:
Now that you know more about how important grounding oneself is, it’s time to get out there with your bare feet and start to enjoy your intimate relationship with mother nature! Swim in the ocean, walk barefoot on the sand or grass, garden without shoes, go camping… and you may surprise yourself a how much better you may feel!
The information from this article was based on the book ‘Earthing. The most important health discovery ever?’ written by Clinton Ober, Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D. and Martin Zucker. Included in the book are case studies and photographs showing comparisons before and after grounding using dark field microscopes and thermal images. I would strongly suggest you read the book for more information.
